PFA Chief Executive Brendan Schwab congratulated Western Sydney Wanderers Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman and Head Coach Tony Popovicon the announcement of the club’s crest, colours and home strip, together with the recruitment of locals Tarek Elrich, Aaron Mooy and Kwabena Appiah-Kubas the club’s inaugural players.

“The PFA is delighted to finally see Western Sydney – football’s heartland – represented in the A-League.  It is something we have felt passionately about since the establishment of a new national competition was first mooted a decade ago, and we are delighted to see it come to fruition.  Everyone in the game is deeply committed to the success of the club.

“We are also delighted to see the great respect shown for the game’s rich history in Western Sydney, including the many clubs, players and volunteers that have helped the region produce many of Australia’s greatest professional footballers, including Tony himself,” Schwab said.

The PFA especially recognised the signing of former Newcastle Jets player Tarek Elrich as one of the club’s inaugural players.

“Tarek is one of the A-League’s most exciting and successful A-league players.  Still only 25, he has demonstrated great leadership qualities often in difficult circumstances and a commitment to the wellbeing of his fellow professional.  I have no doubt he will be a great asset for the Wanderers,” Schwab added.

The Wanderers complete the A-League’s 10 team competition, and become the 13th side to complete in the A-League since its inception in 2005/06.

Ends.
