In 2009/2010 the PFA introduced the PFA Pitch Rating System. Designed to measure the quality of football pitches across the A-League, it measured four key criteria of the playing surface: overall quality, hardness, pace and smoothness. In 2011/2012 the system’s name was changed to PFA Stadium Rating System to reflect the inclusion of an additional criterion: atmosphere.

Voted on by the visiting captain at the end of each match, who rate each criteria out of five, the PFA Stadium Ratings along with the Injury Report have played a significant role in increasing the awareness of safety and the importance of first-class surfaces. Additionally it also recognises the fans as a key pillar for the growth of the A-League and W-League. The 2013/2014 season saw the PFA Stadium Rating System extended to the W-League.
